We love cats, but have we ever wondered what cats love? Many would say that cats are cold and distant creatures, but the thing is that most of us don’t know how to establish a relationship with them.

They love fresh, high-quality food

You might spend minutes in a row at the pet aisle in the supermarket trying to find the best taste for your furry buddy, but the type of food and its quality are far more important. Aim to feed them both wet and dry food because they act in different ways.
For example, wet food is essential because cats tend not to drink enough water, and in this way, through food, they will get hydrated properly. Then, dry food is a staple, and it also helps the cat clean their teeth.
Try to feed them high-quality, protein-rich diets. Look for options with real meat or fish as the first ingredient and avoid foods loaded with fillers or artificial additives. If you are worried about variety, you can consider incorporating occasional treats or fresh, cat-safe foods like small pieces of cooked chicken or fish.
Daily playtime
Usually, a sad cat is just a bored cat. This is a rule you can try to follow, and most of the time, you’ll see that this is true for most healthy cats. If they don’t have a medical condition and they seem sad, they are probably just very bored.
Stereotypes say that cats are lazy and love sleeping all day. This is somehow true because a cat spends about 12 hours per day asleep, but this is a serious reason behind it. They evolved to sleep this much in order to preserve their energy for hunting. Also, since they are crepuscular animals, they are most active at dawn and dusk.
This means that when they are not sleeping, our cats are full of energy and ready to chase their prey. So, what can you do about it? Play with them! They need it every day, and you are the only one able to provide it. It’s true that if you have more than one cat, they will play together, and you will not need to get that involved, but if you have just one cat, this becomes your job.
Scratching and clawing are part of their daily life
Scratching isn’t just something cats do—it’s something they need to do! Why? Well, they need to sharpen those claws, or maybe stretch their muscles, and scratching is the natural way they do these things. It’s simply an instinctual behavior that brings a lot of joy to your cat’s life.
Your cat is designed to hunt, and this is the reason why they need their claws to be in peak condition at all times. When they scratch, they remove the outer layer of the claw only to make space for the sharper and healthier layer underneath.
But as we already stated, scratching is not just about their claws. Try to imagine that for a cat, stretching is something like how it feels for us to stretch. Is very refreshing! After a scratching session, cats often appear more alert and energized, making it a perfect “wake-up” routine for a sleepy kitty.
What you have to do is provide your cat with designated scratching areas, such as a scratching post or cat tree. If you don’t do this, cats, as the resourceful creatures that they are, will find a way to scratch anyway, and this is how you might get your chairs and your couch destroyed.
They love to spend time with you
Cats are not the angry goblins some people say they are. Your cat loves you, and it’s very important for them to spend quality time with you. They crave love and attention. It’s true that they are independent and can stay alone for a while, but at the end of the day, they form strong bonds with their owners.
Maybe the clearest sign of affection felines make is purring. This is an unmistakable gesture, and if your cat purrs while they sit in your lap or while they are rubbing against your leg, it is clear that they love you and they want you to love them back. The same thing applies to bunting—when your cat gently presses her head against you—this is a loving gesture that signifies trust and affection.
Also, meowing is another sign of love because cats do this more in the presence of humans than with other cats. They have other non-verbal ways of communicating, so you can be sure that when your friend is being vocal around you, this is probably a message just for you.
They love grooming
Did you know adult cats spend nearly half their waking hours grooming? Yes, they do that, but what is fascinating is that for them, this is so much more than a cleaning routine. They are very clean indeed, but this is also a big part of their happiness and health.
Grooming is also how they relax. Imagine that it is some sort of massage for them, and really, now, who doesn’t love a massage? It helps cats reduce their levels of stress and makes them happy again.
A thing that you may have noticed if you have more cats is that they groom one another. Why? This is a way of communicating. Just like us, humans, they want to create stronger bonds, and grooming is the tool they use to do exactly this.
Even more, when the weather gets hot in the summer, grooming is what helps cats cool down. As they lick their fur, they apply saliva to it, and this cools them down as it evaporates. We can say that this is their “in-built cooling system.”
